Tim Dilworth’s childhood involvement with furniture design and manufacturing was not typical, probably abnormal and definitely border-line illegal. Most summers as a young teen, he worked for his mother, who had a thriving business transforming furniture of questionable origins into “antiques.” (It’s amazing what one person can do with a rasp, steel wool, sandpaper, wax and a bicycle chain wrapped in thick burlap). While pitching in, Dilworth learned to quickly spot the differences between reproductions and originals, and could haltingly identify most of the classic styles. Even though other collectors said he had “a good eye,” Dilworth opted not to follow his mother into the furniture “distressing” business. Instead, he became a film maker and TV producer who’s earned a wide array of credits, from Emmy-award winning Natural History shows about owls, orcas, chimpanzees and numerous other animals, to some of reality television’s iconic programming, such as “Hillbilly Handfishin’.” He made the transition from investment banking, (more akin to his mother’s business than his present career), to documentaries 25 years ago, and has never looked back. Initially interested in documentaries because of his passion for history, he realized that he’s intrigued and energized by all stories with heart and depth, and that connect with a broader audience. Through the years, he has never lost perspective on the fact that it’s a blessing to be able to do work that he loves, most especially when the content and characters are as compelling as “A Better Place.”
